About Touchstone Townhomes

In the simplest of definitions, a builder is one who builds things. In the personage of James D. Standring, that definition becomes totally inadequate. By the beginning of this millenium, Jim Standring had spent half of his life building homes and neighborhoods for Northwest families, but along the way, he has also built a reputation for excellence, compassion, philanthropy, community service, leadership, inspiration and integrity.

As past president and lifetime board member of the Oregon Home Builders Association and the Home Builders Association of Metro Oregon, Standring was named Oregon’s “Builder of the Year” in 1992 and inducted into the Oregon Housing Hall of Fame in 2000.

As owner and president of Westland Industries, Inc., he was responsible for the construction of over 1435 homes and the development of close to 1,000 lots in the Metro Portland area during the past thirty-one years.

He is currently owner of Standring Holdings, Touchstone Townhomes, Quatama Park Townhomes and Oak Street Townhomes, and a partner in Standring Groveland Investment Co., Far West Properties, 68th Street Investors and Bull Believers. Also, as a partner in Aloha Land & Cattle Company until 2006, Standring was active in developing over 80,000 square feet of mini storage, 450 manufactured home spaces and 3000 lots over the past 24 years.

James Standring prepared himself well for his multiple responsibilities, obtaining a double major BS in Political Science Urban Studies and Business Administration at the California State University in Fresno, California. In addition, he obtained a MS in Hospital Administration at the same university.

He is a resident of Portland, Oregon, married to Patty, and they have six children, Craig, Ryan, Mindy, Kevin, Nick and Noelle, as well as ten grandchildren. As a member of the Portland Golf Club, Multnomah Athletic Club and Portland University Club, Standring leads an active private life, with his main interests being golf, traveling and reading.

Throughout his career, he has always found time to participate in many community efforts and organizations, particularly those that deal with children. He continues to be a member of the Advisory Committee for the Oregon Medical Laser Center, Oregon Health Services, University/St. Vincent Hospital, and he was directly involved in the successful $500,000 fund raising effort for the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

Standring claims to be guided in life by a number of personal tenets, which he is willing to share with anyone wise enough to listen. Among them are these select few;

Be fair and honest in all things.
Have an acute sense of propriety.
Never let the sun set on an argument.
Laugh freely...even sometimes at yourself.
People function from love or fear. Love is better.
Leave everything and everyone better than you found them.
When it is all said and done, your family is really all that is important.
